About The History Of The Church
In 1948, three sisters were baptized into the Lord's body in Florida. After their return home to Charleston they wanted to share their good news with family and friends. During this time they sought a place that could be used for worship services.
The elders at The San Souci and Hester Streets congregation, along with the congregation in Andrews, South Carolina helped to establish a place for worship.
In February of 1949, Brother Ernest Harrell from Osteen, Florida became the first full-time minister for the congregation. The congregation grew as a result of several gospel meetings held during the up coming years.
In 1951, the congregation rented a garage as a place of worship from Mr. Joe Davis in Accabee. During this time, the church purchased property on Hugo Avenue in the union Heights area. While waiting construction of the building a gospel meeting was held. The response of those hearing and obeying the gospel was great and encouraging to members.
In the spring of 1952, a small building was completed with the help of Brother Ernest Brown and Inabinett of the San Souci and Hester Street congregation. The location of the edifice on Hugo Avenue was known as the Hugo Avenue Church of Christ.
Early in 1956, the brethren of the church recognized a need to expand. Several Brothers were appointed to oversee the project. A loan was secured from First Federal Savings and Loan to undertake the project. The new building was completed in 1956. Shortly after the completion of the building, our minister died on September, 22, 1958.
In 1959, Brother Frank N. McElveen became the new minister for the congregation. Under Brother McElveen's leadership and the support of the members, the congregation grew in "leaps and bounds." The Brethren again saw the need for expansion to accommodate the existing membership as well as anticipated growth in membership.
Property was purchased on Jacksonville Road upon the approval of the brothers and the congregation for $16,000. A building committee was selected to oversee the new project. To move forward with the plans to build, the committee initiated a bond program in the amount of $85,000. A contractor from Anco Structures of Alabama was secured to begin the work. The foundation laid in 1969 and much of the inside work of the building was done by various brothers in the congregation. In 1972 the structure was complete for approximately $115,000. This building consisted of a fellowship hall and kitchen, minister’s office, work room, nine (9) classrooms, nursery, large foyer, and 320 seat auditorium. The first worship service was held on December 3, 1972.
In 1984, due to substantial growth of membership, the church saw a need to once again build. We then purchased five (5) acres of land at the corner of Azalea Drive and Bonds Avenue. In 1984, a bond program was initiated in the amount of $1,250.000.00 to support this work. Construction bids were sought and Hill Construction Company was selected as the contractor. The 23,125 square ft. brick-veneer structure includes a 1000 seat auditorium, 22 classrooms, church library, a commercial kitchen, fellowship hall, administrative offices, audio/visual room, nursery, toddler room and training rooms.
The first worship services of Azalea Drive Church of Christ were held on September 21, 1986. Gospel meetings are held annually and efforts are continuing toward reaching the lost. Members and visitors are in attendance every Sunday.
